Background

I enjoy looking at design and craft works in any form or field. Whenever I have spare time, I like to experiment with different styles, contemplating how I can incorporate them into my own modest style. I strive to create new looks using the items in my wardrobe that truly reflect my personal taste, all while being conscious of time and budget. However, I must admit that this process can sometimes be less than thrilling, and there are instances where I find myself investing more time than anticipated without achieving the desired outcome, leading to a sense of frustration😫.

Defining The Problem

I discovered that my interest in fashion and personal style resonates with many others who also value efficiency in their use of time and money. Viewing this as a design project, I recognized the need for data beyond my own personal experiences. To gather a broader range of insights, I conducted a short survey on the topic. I reached out to a diverse group of individuals, aiming to capture a variety of perspectives. If you're interested, you can find the survey questions at this link: STYLEBIT

Here are some of my findings:

  • For 75.8% of participants, the style of their clothes is important.

  • 76% of participants are struggling to find their desired style to wear.

  • More than 60% of them use “trying several combinations to find the best look” as a solution.

  • Near 90% of the participants get inspirations around their style from social media or shopping centers.

  • And the chart below shows how they would like to spend their time for shopping their favorite clothes:

The survey I conducted provided valuable insights that have deepened my understanding of the subject and propelled me forward. Based on the responses received, it became evident that many individuals struggle when it comes to preparing for special occasions such as birthday parties or weddings. This often leads to investing more time and energy in the pursuit of their desired look. Additionally, I discovered a common complaint among participants regarding the expenditure of a significant amount of money on clothes that eventually fall out of favor. Furthermore,  I came to know that individuals over 50 years old, who shared a common sentiment about the challenges they face in finding outfits that align with their evolving style preferences as they age.

As mentioned earlier, a significant number of survey participants indicated that they draw inspiration for their style from shopping centers. Two main scenarios emerged from their responses:

  1. Participants who have a specific idea in mind and require additional time to search among different stores to find the desired clothing items.

  2. Participants who are not actively seeking a particular item at the moment but are interested in gathering inspiration for future shopping trips. They enjoy exploring stores and discovering new styles to spark their creativity.

✨What if there was a style planner or a virtual stylist next to them like StyleBit.

Before delving into a specific solution, I conducted research on existing apps and websites that aim to assist users with their style and clothing shopping journeys. I discovered some impressive features that save time and encountered well-designed examples. However, I noticed that many of these platforms primarily catered to female users or emphasized a particular feminine image. Finding the right clothing pieces and effectively mixing and matching items from one's wardrobe can unexpectedly consume a significant amount of time. Additionally, not everyone is inclined to follow fashion designers or keep up with their online feeds. Therefore, it is essential to provide a solution that is efficient and accessible to a broader audience.

“If you don't think you have the time or the money to make a difference with your clothing choices, think again”. This piece of advice is from an article published in Harper's Bazaar (22 Apr 2020). The article discusses the idea of being more sustainable with clothes and offers 10 steps to reach this goal, such as being more informed where to shop, changing attitudes to shopping, and adjusting how to spend money for clothes.
